The tiger is free. No boundary holds him. No voice has named his limits or drawn the edges of his world.
And yet he pauses.
There is a knowledge that lives below instinct — older than ambition, quieter than hunger. It does not arrive as hesitation. It arrives as clarity. The particular lucidity of a creature that has looked honestly at what stands before it and understood, without apology, where its own horizon truly lies.
This is not the pause of diminishment. It is the pause of precision — the moment freedom turns inward, consults itself, and returns with an answer that belongs to no one else.
To know oneself completely is also to know this: that not every distance was meant to be crossed. That the horizon which dazzles is not always the horizon which fits.
And that knowing the difference — choosing from within rather than grasping from without — is perhaps the most sovereign act available to a free creature.
